As part of the Mindpirates’ Psychedelic Film Month, Meupe curate two artists to feature following a screening of Sergei Parajanov’s The Colour of Pomegranates. Pillowdiver (12k, Germany) presents his most recent work based upon “Frozen Soundtracks“; long dronescapes using material exclusively from any one film. Meupe’s Traianos Pakioufakis will further fall into his on-going obsession with the live mix via a long, looping improvisational set.

To get to the Mindpirates you must travel in a spiral. — EW

Pillowdiver (12k / GER / DJ set)

Meupe presents their first show outside of Western Australia this April in Berlin.

Fabio Orsi is an electronic musician from Taranto in southern Italy. Orsi’ prolific output has had him heralded as a master of modern ambience, creating rich, freeform atmospheres with organic instrumentation and processed sounds. Though known for momentous pieces of hypnotic power, his latest work for the Preservation label — “Stand Up Before Me, Oh My Soul!” — marks a dynamic new turn in Orsi’s sound. The force of his composition takes more of an overt stance. The raw and primal pulse at the heart of his music is writ large here with a punk mindset, unleashing a heady mass of guitars against a backdrop of cavernous, shimmering distortion and crashing drums. It also boasts a bristling sense of lysergic, hazy melody.

Kynan Tan is a young sound artist from Perth, Western Australia. He creates installation, performances and recorded works that investigate the use of digital technology in creating immersive and temporal audio-visual environments. His live performance works are based on scored and improvised instrumental parts and real-time manipulation via MaxMSP.

Live acts start 9pm sharp, live music all over by 10:30pm. DJs Pillowdiver and Meupe play until close. Donation entry.

Cassettes, podcasts + a Meupe Shop sale!

24 May, 2010

Well, where to start. We’ve just updated the Meupe Shop, adding the incredible new Gilbert Fawn album Dead Rhythm and dropping all Meupe catalog items to ridiculous prices. The sale also includes the very last few copies of Craig McElhinney’s Loser Orientation, never before available online. So for those McElhinney fans around Australia and the rest of the world, get in now! It’s cheaper than an iTunes download, you know.

Speaking of Gilbert Fawn, he’s just completed a podcast for us, entitled Condolences. You can download his great mix from here.

Finally, we thought we’d announce that we’re releasing a very, very limited edition Matt Rösner cassette this Friday night at Kulcha in Fremantle. Volume 1, the first in a series of three tapes from Rösner, features collaborations with Perth artists Adam Trainer and Greg Taw (Ghost of 29 Megacycles). Any remaining cassettes will be sold between the Meupe Shop and possibly…

…our North American distributor, Experimedia. This is the first time you’ll be able find Meupe available in hand picked physical stores around the USA. For those in North America, this also means our catalog items are available from Experimedia at a price you’re used to. Enjoy!

James Blackshaw cancels Australian tour

2 March, 2010

Meupe & Tura New Music present
The Ambassador From Everywhere 21
Thursday March 4, 2010
Rosemount Hotel
8pm / $8

Golden Staph
Craig McElhinney & Chris Cobilis
Silver Bulletin
Jane Harris

James Blackshaw has unfortunately had to postpone his highly anticipated Australian tour due to illness. This news comes as a huge shock and great disappointment, but we wish James all the best in getting back on track. Additionally, as a result of this unfortunate news, Mental Powers have also pulled out of the bill.

But the show must go on as Ambassador From Everywhere 21 is Meupe‘s first step back into action after a summer break and we firmly stand by the Sabre Tooth Tigers when they preach “Never give up!” — like hip hop, it’s a way of life. So joining the previously billed Craig McElhiney & Chris Cobilis duo and soloist Jane Harris are Golden Staph and Silver Bulletin.

James Blackshaw (UK) plays Perth in March

7 February, 2010

Meupe & Tura present
The Ambassador From Everywhere 21
featuring James Blackshaw (UK / Young God) Thursday March 4, 2010
Rosemount Hotel
8pm / $15

James Blackshaw (UK / Young God, Important)
Mental Powers
Craig McElhinney
Jane Harris

Meupe and Tura are thrilled to host the debut performance by James Blackshaw in Australia.

Still yet to reach the age of 30, London’s James Blackshaw has made an incredible impact on the canon of modern acoustic music. Compared to the likes of 12-string masters Bert Jansch, John Fahey and Leo Kottke, Blackshaw’s approach to the guitar can also find kindred spirits in minimalist composers such as Steve Reich.

Having marked his presence with the release of several limited CDr albums — all of which were reissued by Tompkins Square in 2008 — Blackshaw’s dazzling style of deep beauty has now graced eight albums, the latest being The Glass Bead Game for Michael Gira’s Young God label. The Glass Bead Game is the second time Blackshaw has swapped his guitar for piano in some pieces, but he also employs vocals, harmonium, cello and violin for what The Observer said was “full to the breaking point of bliss itself” and “the most forward-thinking and sublimely executed of James Blackshaw’s releases to date.”

Regrets guaranteed for those who miss this rare, fine evening. Presented in association with room40 and the Lost Weekend.
