James Blackshaw has unfortunately had to postpone his highly anticipated Australian tour due to illness. This news comes as a huge shock and great disappointment, but we wish James all the best in getting back on track. Additionally, as a result of this unfortunate news, Mental Powers have also pulled out of the bill.

But the show must go on as Ambassador From Everywhere 21 is Meupe’s first step back into action after a summer break and we firmly stand by the Sabre Tooth Tigers when they preach “Never give up!” — like hip hop, it’s a way of life. So joining the previously billed Craig McElhiney & Chris Cobilis duo and soloist Jane Harris are Golden Staph and Silver Bulletin.

James Blackshaw (UK) plays Perth in March

Rosemount Hotel
8pm / $15

Meupe and Tura are thrilled to host the debut performance by James Blackshaw in Australia.

Still yet to reach the age of 30, London’s James Blackshaw has made an incredible impact on the canon of modern acoustic music. Compared to the likes of 12-string masters Bert Jansch, John Fahey and Leo Kottke, Blackshaw’s approach to the guitar can also find kindred spirits in minimalist composers such as Steve Reich.

Having marked his presence with the release of several limited CDr albums — all of which were reissued by Tompkins Square in 2008 — Blackshaw’s dazzling style of deep beauty has now graced eight albums, the latest being The Glass Bead Game for Michael Gira’s Young God label. The Glass Bead Game is the second time Blackshaw has swapped his guitar for piano in some pieces, but he also employs vocals, harmonium, cello and violin for what The Observer said was “full to the breaking point of bliss itself” and “the most forward-thinking and sublimely executed of James Blackshaw’s releases to date.”

Regrets guaranteed for those who miss this rare, fine evening. Presented in association with room40 and the Lost Weekend.

The Ambassador From Everywhere 20

30 November, 2009

Meupe present
The Ambassador From Everywhere 20
Tuesday December 8, 2009
Spectrum Project Space
7pm / $5

Solo Andata (12k, Melb/Per)
Anonymeye (Bris)
Ben Hamblin

Wow, time really waits for no one. Joining us at Spectrum gallery to celebrate a huge 2009 and our twentieth Ambassador From Everywhere event are very special guests Anonymeye (Bris), Solo Andata (12k, Melb/Per) and Ben Hamblin.

Touring the release of his beautiful and well titled second album, The Disambiguation of Anonymeye, Andrew Tuttle (aka Anonymeye) introduces his unique mix of experimental rustic steel-string guitar stylings and analogue synths to Perth.

Solo Andata should need no introduction to Perth audiences, yet this is the first time Paul Fiocco and Kane Ikin perform in their home city under their current nom de plume. Their highly anticipated and critically acclaimed second album — out through New York’s increasingly influential 12k label — saw Solo Andata take a more abstract approach to song structure, honing in on the micro details of their every day environments to create a dense listening space.

One of Meupe’s favourite local sound artists, Ben Hamblin, is to the clarinet as Oren Ambarchi is to the guitar. His unique approach to the instrument coupling live techniques with MaxMSP mastery is seriously next level and not to be missed!

Regrets guaranteed for those who miss this fine summer evening.

Craig McElhinney EP “Loser Orientation” out now!

30 September, 2009

Craig McElhinney’s
debut album You and Me Are Young and Brutal was released in just April this year. The album acutely illustrates McElhinney’s distinctive doom guitar technique and first forays into solo improvisation. Following its release, McElhinney has performed relentlessly around Perth, reinterpreting the sound of You and Me Are Young and Brutal whilst being propelled by the energy of being a solo performer. It is no surprise that just three months later, McElhinney has handed us new recordings.

Recorded and mixed in a single weekend in Myalup, Western Australia by M. Rosner, Loser Orientation finds McElhinney in the midst of a phase of hyperproductivity. The record contains both some of the most exploratory and poppy moments yet from the young guitarist, documenting his Bruce Lee inspired formless form approach. McElhinney’s journey began by bringing us the sound of taking the mountains to the sea. Loser Orientation is the calm before the surfer’s realisation of an imminent tidal wave.

Download available NOW exclusively from iTunes.

Limited edition numbered CDr available exclusively from McElhinney live performances as of Saturday October 17, 2009. Edition of 66.
